Stencil

Like most other artforms, stenciling has gone through difficult times when it was considered as a lowly art that was promoted in the early ages by Japanese and Chinese. Designs were held in place by the employment of silk screens and using paper to print their designs on.

On the other hand, the printing press paved way to the manufacture of books with stencil patterns. Since they couldn’t import (or perhaps pay for) wallpapers and furnishings, early American colonists used stencils to decorate their walls and wooden furnishings. These settlers supplied their own materials and fashioned their own furnishings through stenciling. While traveling in New England, artisans widely promoted the employ of stencils.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, walls, furnishings and shirts were all created with stencils. However, it fell when wallpaper grew less costly by the end of the 19th century.

Then by the 20th century just a few organizations maintained the apply of stencils and it nearly died off. It’s revival was secured by the film industry in America. Film frames were stenciled through the start of a mechanical process by ‘Pathe’. Stenciling also became alive between the 1920′s and 1930′s when throughout this time, it was believed fashionable to have stencils in homes. Book publishers also used the method to develop color separations when illustrating books.

Then later that century during the 1970′s individuals wanted something more than wallpaper, and stencils once again came to the rescue. From its modest roots, stenciling has gone through many changes and taken many forms to become what it is currently. From the crude materials like leaves, tree bark, timber blocks, stencil card and polyester movie, stencils today are very different from the stencils in the early times. Designs and layers are plentiful in the stencils of up-to-date times.

Truly, stenciling journeyed a long hard way before it was established as an art and not a mere planning tool. No other form of art has been applied so successfully by individuals to personalize their property. It provided individuals the power to choose the design they wanted and moreover, it has given every individual the chance to be an artist in their own right.
